Steam distilled from the seeds in the fruit of the Myristica Fragrans tree, the nutmeg resembles a superhero mask. The outer red portion is mace, while the inner nut is the nutmeg.
Nutmeg essential oil is a middle note. It has an exotic scent which is warm and sweet with a bit of spice and just a hint of a woody note.
There are two types of nutmeg essential oil; East Indian and West Indian. These two different types of nutmeg essential oil are different chemotypes, have different chemical composition, and therefore different safety considerations. For the most part, you will find nutmeg essential oil on the shelf to buy from the East.
There are also different qualities of nutmeg which sell at very different price points. A lower quality of nutmeg (one that may have had fungus on it from being picked even a day past it’s prime) can sell for half the amount of fresh, unblemished nutmeg. The tree will begin producing nutmeg when it reaches the age of 8. Nutmeg trees can live for approximately 100 years.
A Helpful Chemical Makeup
Nutmeg essential oil is largely composed of alpha – and beta-pinene, two chemical components that have anti-inflammatory properties. You may also find 4-Terpineol, which has antibacterial and pain relieving properties. Myrcene is a chemical component also known for pain relieving qualities. Nutmeg essential oil may contain sabinene, which has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Chemical components of essential oils can change from season to season, or due to where they grow. Double check the data sheets from your supplier if you are looking for a specific quality.
