Why Choose Beeswax for DIY Christmas Gifts?
Beeswax is a versatile and sustainable ingredient that’s perfect for crafting. It’s all-natural, smells faintly of honey, and is ideal for making gifts that are both beautiful and functional. When you are DIY crafting, beeswax offers endless possibilities, for candles, ornaments, even skincare products.
The bonus is, DIY Christmas gifts made with beeswax add a cozy, handmade charm to your presents, making them extra special during the holiday season.
DIY Beeswax Candle in a Mug
There’s nothing cozier than the soft glow and soothing scent of a handmade candle on a winter evening. Candles make excellent DIY Christmas gifts because they’re both practical and charming. With this project, you’ll use an adorable mug as the container—perfect for gifting.
What You’ll Need:
- Mugs (2 oz size; dollar stores are great for this)
- Wicks
- Beeswax
- Essential oils (I’ve included a list of my favourites below)
- Wax melting pot
- Water bath
- Candy thermometer or digital thermometer
- Popsicle stick
- Scale that measures grams
- Paper towels
- Rubbing alcohol
Instructions:
- Prepare Your Mug:
Clean the inside of the mug with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel. Once dry, secure the wick in the center of the mug using a wick holder. - Measure the Wax:
Place the mug on a scale, tare to zero, and fill it with water to measure the weight in grams. Use this measurement to determine the amount of beeswax needed for each mug. You will want to make sure to leave a bit more room than you think you need at the top, so that once you add the essential oil, everything fits nicely in the mug with no extra melted wax. - Melt the Wax:
Place the measured beeswax in a melting pot. Set the pot over a water bath and heat gently on the stove until fully melted. Never use a microwave, as beeswax is flammable. - Add Essential Oils:
Once the wax reaches 185°F, remove it from heat and add in essential oils. Stir for two minutes. - Pour the Wax:
Carefully pour the melted wax into the prepared mug, holding the wick upright. Use a popsicle stick or wick holder to stabilize the wick as the wax cools and hardens.
Scent Ideas:
Here are a few essential oils that work beautifully for candles:
- Cedarwood
- Cinnamon
- Clove
- Lavender
- Lemon
- Patchouli
- Peppermint
- Siberian Fir
- Vetiver
It’s always helpful to keep candle safety tips in mind before you light your candle. Here are a few cautions for you to know.
Candle Safety Tips:
- Always trim the wick to 1/4 inch before lighting.
- Never leave a candle unattended. It should always be in your line of sight when lit.
- Keep candles away from flammable materials. For example chemicals, fabrics and home decor.
- Always keep candles out of reach of pets and children. They could accidentally knock them over or get burned, which may lead to a fire or other serious accidents.
- Keep candle free of any foreign materials including matches and wick trimmings. Make sure that you discard these separately.
- Only burn your candle on a level, fire-resistant surface.
- Do not burn candle for more than two hours at a time.
- Stop use when only 1/4″ of wax remains.
Scented Beeswax Ornaments
Scented beeswax ornaments are fun to make and bring a festive aroma to any space. These are so cute when tied to your gift packaging. Or hang them on your tree, or wrap them in colourful tissue paper and use them as stocking stuffers!
Bonus tip: Once the holiday season is over, you can hang these in a closet or use them in your clothing drawer for an extra bit of freshness.
Check the dollar store or your local craft store for Christmas themed molds. The recipe below made 3 snowflakes using the mold that I have. You may need to use more wax depending on the number of ornaments you would like to make, and the size of your mold.
What You’ll Need:
- Snowflake mold (check your local craft stores. Michael’s carries a snowflake mold online)
- Beeswax (30 grams)
- Essential oils (2 grams)
- Skewer
- Ribbon
Instructions:
- Melt the Wax:
Gently melt 30 grams of beeswax in a melting pot in a water bath. - Add Essential Oils:
Stir in your essential oils after the wax has melted completely. I’ve used 0.5 grams cinnamon, 0.5 grams clove, and 1 gram lemon essential oil. - Pour into Mold:
Pour the melted wax into a silicone snowflake mold. Allow it to cool slightly before using a skewer to poke a hole at the top of each ornament for the ribbon. - Add Ribbon:
Once the wax is fully hardened, remove the ornaments from the mold and thread a ribbon through the hole for hanging.
These ornaments are versatile—you can customize the shapes, colours, and scents to match your holiday décor!
Beeswax Lip Balm
Give the gift of soft, hydrated lips with this simple DIY beeswax lip balm. It’s an ideal stocking stuffer or small gift for friends, teachers, or coworkers.
What You’ll Need:
- Beeswax (10 grams)
- Virgin Coconut oil (10 grams)
- Fractionated coconut oil (10 grams)
- Peppermint essential oil (5 drops)
- Lip balm containers (here’s a great option)
Instructions:
- Melt the Wax and Coconut Oils:
Combine the beeswax and coconut oils in a melting pot over a water bath. Heat gently until melted. - Add Essential Oil:
Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in 5 drops of peppermint essential oil. - Pour into Containers:
Carefully pour the mixture into clean, empty lip balm containers. Let it cool and solidify before sealing the containers.
These lip balms are perfect for on-the-go hydration and a lovely way to introduce someone to natural skincare!
