When you feel the beginnings of a headache, and you are interested in natural remedies, you may wonder: Are there essential oils for headache relief?
As the seasons change, the days get darker and the cold weather begins to settle in. Many of us begin to feel not quite our perky selves. Changes in barometric pressure and increased cloud can effect us in many ways including headaches. Essential oils, when used properly, can have effects on us such as reducing inflammation and tension, and increasing feelings of relaxation, happiness and well-being.
Common Causes of Headaches
Blame It on the Weather
The Fall often ushers in drastic temperature changes, fluctuating between the last remnants of autumn warmth and the brisk chill of impending winter. These temperature swings can be particularly harsh on our bodies. Our blood vessels constrict and dilate in response to these fluctuations, and for some individuals, this can lead to headaches. The drop in barometric pressure that often accompanies inclement weather can trigger migraines in those who are susceptible. The changing daylight hours can also disrupt our sleep patterns, exacerbating the situation further.
Eye Strain
Whether it’s sitting at the computer for too long without a break, or a strain put on your eyes due to the contrast of bright lights at night and the darkness, eye strain can be the beginning of discomfort.
Stress of the Season
When holiday season is approaching, many find themselves caught in a whirlwind of preparations, family obligations, and work-related stressors. This uptick in stress can be a major headache trigger. The body’s response to stress can lead to muscle tension, contributing to stress induced and tension headaches.
Dietary Discrepancies
Our diet can also play a pivotal role in the onset of headaches. Whether it is a food intolerance or a few extra sweets, comfort foods such as pumpkin-spiced delights, and holiday meals can contribute to overall body aches including headaches. Excess caffeine and low water intake can lead to dehydration leaving us looking for headache relief. Using apps or tracking your water intake in a journal are great ways to try to get more water into your day.
Hormonal Fluctuations
Hormones can also play a factor. Hormonal fluctuations, especially for those who experience menstrual migraines, can add another layer to the headache equation.
November, with its beautiful autumnal hues and early signs of winter’s approach, is a complex month. It’s a time when nature herself goes through a transformative phase. Just as the leaves change colors and fall, our bodies adapt to the seasonal shifts. Understanding the common causes of headaches and migraines empowers us to take a holistic approach to wellness, making it easier to navigate the season’s challenges and find relief from these unwelcome guests. Thankfully, we can tackle headaches head-on, helping to ensure a more enjoyable season.
